III Generations
With the teachings of his grandfather and father fresh in his mind, Bill Ludwig III is ushering in a new age of excellence in drum craftsmanship.

Generations
My Grandfather, William F. Ludwig passing the torch of drum making to me. Three Generations of Ludwigs. Three Generations of Quality Drum Making.

The expanding Ludwig empire taking hold on 1728 N. Damen Ave in Chicago(bottom right), to the three generations enjoying a day out on Lake Michigan. The Ludwig family through the years.
1950's-1980's
The Ludwig family was an amazingly fun family of drummers to grow up in. I was never forced to play the drums. It was by seeing these amazing players at Mom and Dad’s house, concerts, or in the factory up close and personal, was what inspired me at a young age, and I thought…
I WANT TO BE A DRUMMER!
My parents began taking me to conventions in grade school and by 3rd grade I began accompanying my Dad and grandfather on Saturdays to the factory. While they had meetings, I played in the factory and opened mail, stamping it…"Received". It was my first job, and my pay was getting to play with the switch board! Its' many lights, cords, switches and headset made me think it was the coolest thing ever!! I also loved the sounds and smells of the factory, and watching the machinery making drums, shells and sticks.
I watched my father and grandfather pioneer the drum industry all throughout my childhood. I have such fond memories of our time together at conventions all over the world. Soon enough, I was working alongside my father in the Artist Relations position that brought me behind the scenes of huge productions like Journey, YES, and many other bands whose drummers that became close friends. It was my own experience of being a drummer that allowed me insight into the needs and preferences of other drummers, and product recommendations that would fit their style.
My father and I made the difficult decision to sell the company in 1981. I worked there for another 10 years, before I felt the company was no longer aligned with what my family had built and decided to leave in 1991.

Today
Starting from scratch was not an easy, or even logical move for me at 53 years old. But it was a dream, and with the memories of my family lineage, it was a dream I knew I had to follow.
I am now proud to be building quality snare drums, and a vast line of custom drum kits, all with the help of a skilled team of artisans who, for worse or for better, are also DRUMMERS. My two daughters, Maggie and Olivia, have also been a huge help with everything from marketing to creative direction, and have taken up drumming as well; thankfully I knew a guy to get them their first drum kit!
Overall, I see my dream becoming a reality everyday, and I am so grateful for everyone who has helped in support.
Our factory is located in Lenexa, Kansas, and you are welcome to come visit me and my family there during our many tours and events we host there. Or come stop by a drum convention near you, and experience
The Sound of Generations!
